Green Flag

Corran College was awarded its fourth Green Flag for Travel at a ceremony in Athlone on Wednesday 23rd May.  Mrs Regan (Green Schools Coordinator), Shirley Redican (caretaker) and two student representatives from the Green Schools Committee attended the ceremony.

Our active Green Schools Committee has started planning a strategy to achieve an unprecedented fifth Green Flag for Biodiversity.  Work on this venture will begin in earnest in September.

Ice Cream Morning

Mrs McKeon and her dedicated team of fourth years organised a highly successful ice cream morning in aid of Down’s syndrome Ireland.  A variety of flavours were available on the day in addition to a raffle for sponsored prizes.  Thanks to all who sponsored prizes, baked cakes and made donations.

Award Winners

A team of students working under the guidance of Ms O’Shaughnessy, Mr Flynn and John Gardiner were awarded the “Green Award” from Sligo VEC for the groundwork and construction of a polycarbonate greenhouse on the grounds of Corran College.  The students involved were Dylan Taylor, Eamon Doyle, Tony Porter and Ryan Scanlon (LCA).  The greenhouse is a major asset for our science/biology classes and our PLC in Horticulture students.

Chain around Knocknarae

A large contingent of staff and students attended the attended the “Maeve’s VECtor fundraiser on Knocknarae on Sunday 20th May last.  The climbers formed a ring on the top of Knocknarae and were treated to music from the Uillean pipes of Joe Curley.  A market stall selling bedding plants and homemade jam raised funds for our Tanzania school fund.  Thanks to Ms O’Shaughnessy for organising the plants and to Ms Harte and the fourth year Home Economics class for making the beautiful jams.

Class Tours

The first and second year students had an adventure filled tour to “Zip It” in Forest park Boyle on Friday 18th May.  All students and staff thoroughly enjoyed the high octane adventure.

The trip to Manchester and Alton Towers during Easter 2013 is fully booked.  The fifty places available were and booked up within two weeks of its launch.  

Athletics

Congratulations to Gary Anderson who represented the school in the 200m event in the finals of the Connacht Schools Track and Field Competition in Athlone recently.  Gary had a respectable 6th place finish.  Thanks to Ms Kinsella for organising this and all our sporting events throughout the year.

Third Year Award Ceremony

St. Angela’s Access Programme honoured third year students who have made a significant contribution in Mathematics, English, Irish, Science and Home Economics.  Our worthy recipients were Aoife O’Conner, Nathan O’Dowd, James Mulligan, Jennifer Judge and Conor Healy.
