Grants and Scholarships
County Sligo VEC offer third level maintenance grants to students who reside in Co. Sligo. There are three types of grants:
- Third Level Maintenance Grants for Trainees
- V.E.C. Scholarship Scheme
- Post Leaving Certificate Maintenance Grants
Third Level Maintenance Grants for Trainees
For students who attend Higher Certificate and Ordinary Bachelor Degree courses in Institutes of Technology.

V.E.C. Scholarship
For students who attend approved full time undergraduate and postgraduate courses in:
- Institutes of Technology
- Crawford Municipal School of Art, Cork
- National College of Art and Design
- Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology
- University of Limerick
- Dublin City University
- The Law Society of Ireland, Blackhall Place
- National College of Ireland

Post Leaving Certificate Maintenance Grants
For students who are entering Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) courses for the first time

Students need only to complete one application form and return it to County Sligo V.E.C.
These grants are means-tested and candidates are assessed on their parents income for the tax year January - December 2009. The following are the income limits where there are less than four dependent children i.e.
- €41,110 for Full Maintenance & Full Fees
- €42,235 for 75% Maintenance & Full Fees
- €44,720 for 50% Maintenance & Full Fees
- €47,205 for 25% Maintenance & Full Fees
- €51,380 for Fees-only Grants
Mature Students
Mature students are students who are at least 23 years of age on 1st January on the year of entry to the course. Mature Independent Candidates are applicants who were not residing with their parents from 1st October of the previous year. Mature Dependent Candidates are applicants who are residing with their parents on 1st October of the previous year, and these will be assessed on their parents' income for tax year 2009.
Original Documents to be submitted with application:
Birth Certificate (original - will be copied and returned to you)
If parents are PAYE workers, then P.60's and P.21 Balancing Statement for tax year January - December 2009. A P.21 can be obtained from income tax office by submitting P.60's and asking for P.21 for relevant year. You can also obtain it from www.ros.ie.
If parents are in receipt of social welfare then a statement from Social Welfare showing type of welfare received for tax year 2009 and total amount received for that tax year.
If self-employed then set of accounts for tax year 2009 (including adjusted profit computation) and most recent Notice of Assessment from income tax office.
