Within the new configuration County Sligo, County Mayo and County Leitrim are being amalgamated. You may be wondering how does this affect your schools and centres of learning. Well! There will be no change to schools or further education centres in the immediate future. So we will continue to provide top class education for our community. There are issues in the area of redepleoyment and reconfiguration of office staff but that will take place over time and with consultation. We will continue to keep you up to date.

  • Music Generation Sligo

    Post date: 1-Jun-2011

Music Generation is Ireland’s National Music Education Programme. It aims to help children and young people access vocal and instrumental tuition in their own locality.

Music Generation, the U2 and Ireland Funds-supported National Music Education Programme, has announced that Sligo, along with Louth and Mayo, has been selected for participation in the first round of the programme. Over the next three years, Music Generation will award a total of up to €1.6 million to these counties to help children and young people access vocal and instrumental tuition in their local areas.

The programme is enabled by a €5 million donation from U2, with a further €2 million being raised by the Ireland Funds, to support the development of a national music programme providing instrumental and vocal music tuition for children and young people up to 18 years of age.

Tony Ó Dálaigh, Chairman of Music Generation said, “These three counties rose straight to the top when an independent panel examined the proposals from around the country. These are regions with a strong track record and commitment to music which was reflected in the high standard of their applications. Music Generation will now offer the opportunity for these counties to build on their development and expand provision to new areas of need.

Minister for Education and Skills, Ruari Quinn TD said, “We are very grateful to U2 and The Ireland Funds for their support in promoting this visionary initiative. The Government is committed to continuing the music education partnerships with Exchequer funding in future years, when the Music Generation donations cease. Music education plays an important role in promoting creativity and self-expression, and in developing children’s cognitive and affective skills. This initiative will enrich the lives of children and their communities in the areas selected for funding.”

    Post date: 1-Jun-2011

Wednesday 18th May saw the opening of Sligo VEC Art and Design Exhibition at the Yeats’ Gallery. A year in the planning, it was time once again for the students of Art and Design at Sligo VEC, Quay Street, to put their creative talents on display.

The space was packed to capacity as the class of 2011 emerged from their creative chrysalis with a stunning array of mediums and styles. The vivid display of colour was notable, reflecting the dynamic of this energetic group exhibition.

Work consisted of a selection of pieces from the 22 students on this year’s PLC. The class spent the year exploring various styles and mediums such as painting, drawing, sculpture, print and design.

Of students who have participated in Sligo VEC’s Art and Design PLC in the past, approximately ninety percent have proceeded to take up degree courses in areas such as fine art, fashion and design. A number of past students have been awarded maximum credits for their portfolios by such illustrious Art colleges as Limerick, Dun Laoghaire, NCAD and Galway.
